A passkey prompt usually separates three actions: choosing an existing account, unlocking the passkey on your device, and receiving confirmation from the website. The device PIN or biometric check is not a request to invent a new website password.
Choose the account before unlocking
Imagine a hypothetical adult reader signing in to a library reading account at a separately verified library website. The passkey chooser displays two account choices: “reader.one” and “reader.two”. The reader intends to open the first account, selects “reader.one”, and only then sees the device-unlock prompt. After entering the device PIN, the library page confirms that “reader.one” is signed in. The observation is important: account selection happened before local device approval, while the website’s confirmation showed the resulting account session.
For a supporting site or app with an existing passkey, the usual sequence is account selection followed by the device’s screen-unlock method; passkey support is not universal. Google’s Chrome help explains this passkey sign-in flow.
What the device check does—and does not do

Your device PIN belongs to the device’s unlock system. Do not type it into a webpage password field, send it to support, or disclose it to anyone. A successful device check alone does not prove that the website completed sign-in; look for the expected account name, profile area, or signed-in message on the site.
When to stop
If the prompt appears unexpectedly, names the wrong account, or the website does not clearly identify the resulting account, cancel it and return to the verified site.
