A Firefox Primary Password unlocks access to saved login details in a Firefox profile. It is not the password for your library account, email account, or any other website. Treat the local unlock, the stored account selected, and the website’s response as three separate events.
What the Primary Password unlocks
Firefox may ask for the Primary Password when the browser needs to use protected saved logins during a session. Entering it only authorises access to information stored locally in that Firefox profile on that device. It is not sent to the webpage as your website password, and it is not a Mozilla account password or a password synchronised as one.
Local access does not establish that the saved credentials remain current.
Hypothetical library-account example
Hypothetical example: An adult opens a library account sign-in page in Firefox. Firefox requests the Primary Password, and the person enters it successfully. The browser then displays two saved usernames. They select the account for the correct library card, and Firefox fills the sign-in fields.
These observations have different meanings. The successful Primary Password entry shows that Firefox’s local stored-login protection was unlocked. Selecting a username identifies which saved entry was used. Only the library page’s response—such as an account page, an error, or another sign-in prompt—indicates the result of that website login. Knowing the Primary Password does not establish that the library credentials are valid.
Practical limits and confusing prompts
A Primary Password can be different on another Firefox profile or device. A prompt appearing there does not prove that the library password changed, and successfully unlocking one profile does not prove that another profile contains the same saved entry. Likewise, a website rejection does not mean the Primary Password was incorrect; it may concern the selected stored account or the website’s own authentication.
