Firefox may ask for your computer’s sign-in method before it displays a saved website password. The prompt is checking access to the device or browser profile, not asking for the Mozilla account password or the password for that website. On supported Firefox desktop setups, this can occur when you reveal, copy, or edit a stored login. Mozilla’s explanation of the authentication prompt describes this as operating-system authentication on macOS or Windows.
What the prompt is unlocking
Revealing a stored password does not sign you into the website or change its password. Identify the prompt by its origin, not by one exact sentence: wording varies by operating system.
Hypothetical reading-account example
Hypothetical example: An adult opens Firefox Passwords directly from the browser settings and selects a saved login for a reading account. The username is visible, but pressing the reveal control produces the computer’s normal sign-in window. After the correct device authentication, Firefox shows the saved password. The reading website remains a separate layer: opening its page in another tab still requires checking whether that tab has an active session. The result confirms access to Firefox’s stored entry, not successful sign-in to the reading service.
When to stop and check the origin
If the request appeared after clicking a webpage button, arriving through an unexpected redirect, or leaving the browser’s settings, cancel it. Reopen Firefox independently, navigate to its Passwords area, and select the saved entry there. A webpage can imitate the appearance of an operating-system dialogue; it does not become genuine merely by displaying familiar words or a lock symbol.
Do not try to bypass the prompt, weaken the protection, or enter a password into a dialogue whose origin is uncertain. If the computer account password is forgotten, use the device’s established account-recovery process rather than guessing. For a support note, record the action that immediately preceded the prompt and whether it was inside Firefox settings. Do not include the password itself, a screenshot revealing it, or any recovery code.
