Firefox fills the wrong username: choose the saved account first

If Firefox places the wrong username in a login form, pause before submitting. Check the account identifier shown in the username field, open the saved-account choices, and select the entry you actually intend to use. A filled field is not proof that the website has accepted that account.

Choose the account before continuing

Firefox can keep several saved logins for the same website. When the username field offers saved names, read each one rather than accepting the first suggestion. Select the intended username, then look at the completed field again. If the displayed name is still wrong, clear it and repeat the selection instead of entering a password or submitting.

The wording and appearance of the menu may vary by Firefox version or page design. The important check is the account identifier: it should match the account you meant to use.

Hypothetical reading-account example

Example only: A fictional reader has two saved usernames for the same expected reading website: reader-work and reader-home. The reader intends to use the home account, but Firefox initially fills reader-work.

The outcome is only that the intended username is now displayed in the form. No password is displayed here, and neither the saved entry nor the filled field proves that the website login succeeded.

What this check does not confirm

Saved login information is stored by the browser, while authentication is determined by the website after submission. A correct-looking username can still lead to an incorrect password message, an account-choice prompt, or no completed session. Confirm success only through the website’s own response, without assuming that a browser suggestion represents an active account.

Mozilla’s Firefox Password Manager guidance describes selecting among saved usernames for a website. Its saved entries remain distinct from a website session.
