A rejected Google Authenticator code has several possible causes worth checking: it may have expired, belong to a different service or account, or be affected by an inaccurate device clock. Check systematically instead of repeatedly guessing.
Check the service and account first
Authenticator can contain several entries that look similar. Read the selected label and compare it with the service and account shown on the sign-in page. A work account must be matched with the work entry; a personal entry can generate a valid-looking code for the wrong account and still be rejected.
Hypothetical example: An adult uses a reading account with separate personal-mail and work-mail entries in Authenticator. The page asks for the work account, but the selected label says personal-mail. No actual verification code is reproduced in this example. After selecting the work label and using its currently shown code, the mismatch is corrected. If the work label is absent, the person stops rather than trying unrelated entries.
Use the current code and review device time
Check that the displayed code is still current before entering it. Do not rely on a code already sitting in notes or copied text. Also check the phone’s date, time, time zone, and automatic time setting. Authenticator codes depend on the device’s time being accurate. Google says newer Authenticator versions use the operating system’s time rather than a separate in-app time-correction control.
Record only which account label was selected and whether time settings were checked. Do not store the code or a screenshot of the Authenticator list.
For the official troubleshooting scope, see Google’s guidance for Authenticator verification codes.
Know when to stop
If the correct service, account entry, current code, and device time all appear right but rejection continues, do not remove multi-factor protection, export codes, or make repeated guesses. Open recovery only through the provider’s official sign-in or help page. The provider may request account ownership checks or offer another verified method; availability and timing are not guaranteed.
